AI PCs — not the same as a gaming PC

Local LLMs, image generation and model work lean on VRAM, RAM capacity, cooling and fast SSD — not “max FPS”. Below: an honest explainer and four build slots .

How an AI PC differs from a regular or gaming PC

A gaming PC is tuned for frames per second. An AI PC is tuned to keep large models in GPU memory and run stably for hours. Related machines — not identical.

GPU VRAM

For local LLMs and generation, VRAM size matters: the model needs to fit (or offload). A gaming card with little VRAM can still hit high FPS — and struggle with larger local models.

Look at GB of VRAM, not only “gaming” marketing.

System RAM

OS + context + layer offload + browser/IDE. 16 GB is often tight; comfortable local work usually starts at 32 GB+.

More RAM does not replace VRAM — different bottlenecks.

Cooling & PSU

Inference and training heat the GPU for hours, unlike a short game session. You need real airflow, PSU headroom and quiet cooling.

A “quiet gaming” case with weak airflow often throttles under AI load.

Storage for models

Model weights are tens of GB each. A fast NVMe and dedicated space for models beats cramming everything onto a tiny system drive.

HDD for models is a bad idea: slow loads and swap pain.

Local LLMs vs cloud

Local: privacy, no per-token bill, offline. Cloud: easier start, but data leaves and cost scales with use. An AI PC makes sense when you actually run models on-site.

We do not promise “cheaper than ChatGPT” without checking your usage.

CUDA, ROCm & honesty

Software stacks (CUDA on NVIDIA, ROCm on AMD) decide what runs out of the box. We invent neither official “AI PC requirements” nor fake FPS for neural nets.

We match the build to your software and budget after a short chat.

FAQ

Can a normal gaming PC work for AI?

Sometimes — if VRAM and RAM/cooling are enough. Often a purpose-built machine wastes less on pure gaming extras and puts more into memory for models.

How much VRAM do I need?

Depends on model and quantization. Small models can live on 8 GB; larger ones need more. We do not invent official numbers — we discuss your scenario.

NVIDIA or AMD?

Many AI tools are smoother on NVIDIA (CUDA). AMD (ROCm) is improving, but check your stack. We will say honestly what will run.

Why a separate SSD for models?

Weights are large; keep the system disk free and use fast NVMe for model loads.

Are site prices made up?

No. The prices match our ready-builds page and are confirmed by component availability at build time.
